Elementary Curriculum

Students in the 2nd/3rd Grade class prepare for their Okefenokee Trip by dissecting owl pellets

The Elementary students master basic academic skills of reading and math in a continuous progress format. Students are individually evaluated and diagnosed. We use a language experience approach to reading which emphasizes purposeful reading and writing. Math focuses on real world number experiences and relies on extensive use of manipulatives.

Science begins with field studies to build a fund of knowledge about how the world around them works. We gradually structure their experiences in the natural world by practicing the scientific method of observing, gathering and organizing data and creating and testing hypotheses.

Social Studies incorporates Geography, History and Civics beginning with children learning about their membership in their own home, school, and community. As children grow and learn, we extend these skills to explore far away cultures both chronologically and geographically. Our emphasis is on active learning.

The Arts are integrated into all subject matter to enrich and extend understanding. Art activities are also opportunities to experience the joys of creative expression.

Students are supported to become responsible and contributing members of the home, school and neighborhood communities. Using a conflict resolution model, we coach students through social challenges that may arise.
